Superb Coronation Proof Crown

Victoria Proof Crown 1839 PR62 NGC, KM741, S-3882, ESC-2560 (R). Plain edge. A pleasing stone-gray Proof from Victoria's famous and "delayed" 1839 Proof set, issued two years following the Queen's coronation. While perhaps most famous for William Wyon's Una and the Lion 5 Pounds, this exemplary crown from that set is by no means to be passed over without remark--a subtle reflectivity over the surfaces reveals whirls of underlying gold and sky blue tones when rotated in hand. The high-quality execution of the piece lends a sculpted and heavily medallic feel to the portrait so often impossible to appreciate on the often banged-up circulation strikings for the later dates of this type.
