João VI 960 Reis 1822-B AU58 NGC, Bahia mint, KM326.2,
LMB-464. Overstruck on a Spanish Colonial 8 Reales during a year of
immense political change. Decidedly one of the key 960 Reis
emissions in the entire pre-independence series, this example is
remarkably well preserved for the issue, displaying strong detail
throughout the wreath, crown, and denomination. Attractive
silver-gray surfaces are complemented by subtle traces of original
luster that remain evident in the protected areas, while light wear
is confined primarily to the highest points of the design. The
fields are pleasing and largely free of significant distractions,
producing an appearance that approaches Mint State quality. Just
the second our firm has handled in two decades, eclipsing the
Paulistana example in quality by leaps and bounds, there as an
XF40, making this an opportunity not to be missed by an advanced
