Inspiring and Extremely Rare 1839 Arequipa 8 Reales

South Peru. Republic 8 Reales 1839 AREQ-MV AU50 NGC, Arequipa mint, KM170.3, Elizondo-186 (Extremely Rare), Flatt-4.23 (this coin). A virtually unattainable date/type from the already elusive Arequipa series and one that will excite any collector of these popular sunface issues. An astounding specimen whose rarity cannot be understated, and the first seen at market since our FUN sale in 2003, which generated an impressive bid of $12,650, the highest price of the entire auction. Embossed with a bold sunface, dove-gray patina, and fine silhouettes surrounding the devices, the piece is left with a most appreciable eye appeal. This is far and away the key type in the entire South Peru series, and remains as just one of three currently certified.
