Charles III 8 Reales 1762 NR-JV AU50 PCGS, Nuevo Reino mint,
KM39, Cal-1198 (this coins), Restrepo-44.1. In contention for the
ultimate rarity within the ever-popular Pillar Dollar series with
the added benefit of possessing a unique visual charm. Only two
examples can be definitively accounted for, with one specimen in
strong hands at the Museum of the Casa de Moneda Bogota (Restrepo
and Barriga Villalba plate coin) and the current example, published
in Domingo de Irigoyen's Gaceta Numismática in 1972. A check
of public sales over the past two decades reveals that this exact
specimen (Gilboy plate coin), only exchanged hands twice over the
past 25 years, a 2002 NAC auction and most recently in 2018 at
Aureo & Calico. Still clinging to its original luster, a lovely
polychromatic patina has overtaken the fields, while the devices
are blessed by a well-centered and firm strike. Given its rarity
and natural beauty, this unicorn is surely to be hunted for
