German States: Brandenburg. Friedrich Wilhelm gold Ducat 1687-LCS AU55 NGC,...
Description
Brandenburg. Friedrich Wilhelm gold Ducat 1687-LCS AU55 NGC, Berlin mint, KM529, Fr-2231, v. Schr-143. 3.46gm. A scarce and fascinating historical type featuring a late portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm, the "Great Elector," who laid the groundwork for Prussia's elevation to great power status, as well as a masted ship plowing the Atlantic. This remarkably well-preserved specimen stands as the only example of its date certified by NGC.So-called "Guinea Ducats" were minted with gold from Africa near where the Great Elector had established his Grossfriedrichsburg Colony. The cost to mine and manufacture these coins was so high that Friedrich Wilhelm allegedly said that each Ducat cost two Ducats to produce!
