Great Britain: Victoria gold Proof "St. George" Sovereign 1871 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC,...
Description
Visually Captivating Ultra Cameo Proof Sovereign
Victoria gold Proof "St. George" Sovereign 1871 PR64 Ultra Cameo
NGC, KM752, S-3856, W&R-319 (R7), Marsh-84A. Plain edge.
Medal alignment. Large BP variety with recut WW initials on
truncation. A painstakingly precise debut for Pistrucci's famous
St. George reverse type employed on Victoria's sovereigns, and one
that carefully captures the pinnacle of early Victorian die
engraving. Each element of the design is lovingly rendered with
thick satin frost overlaying the stark relief of the devices, die
polish lining the fields while perhaps only the most
inconsequential of marks preclude what is otherwise a very nearly
Gem status. Although this particular subvariety may not be quite as
exclusive as its R7 rating by Wilson and Rasmussen
suggests--perhaps 10 to 15 known instead of 1-2--to say that its
difficulty or desirability is at all diminished would not be to do
the piece justice. Tied with the ex. Millennia, Terner example for
the second finest certified, and notably missing from the Bentley
Collection, this offering stands as a veritable treasure for its
future owner.Ex. Abbeygate Collection (Heritage Auction 3089, January 2021, Lot 31236)
