Description

Prized Venetian Osella in Gold

Venice. Alvise IV Mocenigo gold Osella 1766-MS MS62 PCGS, cf. KM-X332 (there in silver), Paolucci-249 (same), Mont-2952 (plate). 13.97gm. A remarkable and probably unique off-metal strike in gold at the weight of 4 Zecchini, struck to commemorate the convention held between the Venetian Doge and the Bey of Tunis. A delicate golden patina dresses the entirety of the planchet, supported by ample luster that illuminates the surfaces. A thin scratch behind the lion is noted for completeness, though it does not detract from the view in hand. This is the specimen illustrated in Eupremio Montenegro's "i dogi e le loro monete," p. 665.

Metal: Gold
Diameter: 32.5mm
