Description
Incredibly Popular 37-1/2 Roubles
Nicholas II gold 37 Roubles 50 Kopecks (100 Francs) 1902 AU58
NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KMY-B65, Fr-170, Bitkin-315 (R2),
Severin-578 (RRR). Mintage: 235. The largest gold issue struck in
Imperial Russia and thus one of the premiere chase coins for
specialists in that area. Bitkin posits that the type was not meant
for circulation, a fact borne out by the remarkable level of
preservation witnessed here, with hardly any discernible wear, even
on the device high points. In fact, upon reconsideration, one would
not be surprised to see this piece assigned a grade in the lower
rungs of Mint State, though we acknowledge the presence of
scattered hits to the planchet.Struck shortly after Russia adopted the international gold standard, this piece reflects the strong influence of foreign banking interests, particularly those in France. Its reverse legend includes "100 Francs," aligning it with the Latin Monetary Union and underscoring economic ties to French lenders. Matching the gold content and fineness of a French 100 Francs coin, the 37 Roubles and 50 Kopeks issue was theoretically interchangeable at par but was never meant for circulation.
