Canada: Prince Edward Island. British Colony "Holey Dollar" of 5 Shillings ND (1813) Fine Details (Cleaned) NGC,
Description
Prince Edward Island. British Colony "Holey Dollar" of 5 Shillings ND (1813) Fine Details (Cleaned) NGC, KM2.1, Faulkner-C.28 (this coin). Weight: 21.24gm. Aperture: 15.73-15.93mm. Hole is through Mexico: Charles III 8 Reales 1779 Mo-FF, Mexico City mint, KM106.2. Although Holey Dollars are more commonly associated with Australia, this example was prepared for circulation in Canada, a distinction that enhances its appeal. This is the very coin pictured in the Faulkner reference book, featured under "Sunshine Dollar" header. The Faulkner book is the first book-length study devoted to Prince Edward Island's Holey Dollar, one of Canada's most distinctive and celebrated colonial-era coins, and its companion Dump. Accompanied by ICC COA #QQ253 and Faulkner reference book.In 1813, rather than striking a new coinage, the acting colonial governor ordered that Spanish American silver dollars be pierced, creating two circulating denominations from each coin. The outer ring was valued at five shillings, while the central piece, known as the "dump," was worth one shilling. The Prince Edward Island Holey Dollar and its accompanying Dump hold a singular place in numismatic and historical study: they are the only coinage in British North America created by piercing and countermarking a coin so that its constituent parts could circulate separately as legal tender. Made from Spanish American dollars, the most widely circulated coin of the period and a recognized standard of value throughout the world, the Holey Dollar and Dump appeal to a range of collecting interests, including the Spanish American series, crown-sized world coins, cut and countermarked coinage, emergency and proclamation issues, semiofficial colonial coinage, and merchants' tokens. No other Canadian coin or token occupies so many categories at once.
