Description

"1844" Contemporary Counterfeit Liberty Half Eagle, Platinum Composition, Uncertified. The platinum composition reflects the period in which this contemporary counterfeit was struck, when gold was worth more than platinum. This is a well-executed die-struck piece that closely resembles federal half eagles of the period, although the portrait and date are noticeably different to the trained eye. Light hairlines and abrasions appear over each side, though there are a few deeper gouges on the obverse overlapping Liberty's face and the field that will quickly identify this piece in future appearances.
