Description

Pupienus (April-July AD 238). AR denarius (21mm, 2.32 gm, 5h). NGC MS 4/5 - 2/5, marks. Rome. IMP C M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Pupienus right, seen from behind / PAX-PVBLICA, Pax enthroned left, branch in raised right hand, transverse scepter cradled in left arm. RIC IV.II 4.

Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus was elected as co-emperor to Balbinus by the senate following the death of both Gordian I and II in the tumultuous Year of the Six Emperors. While Pupienus was tasked with leading military efforts against the usurper Maximinus Thrax, tensions quickly arose between him and Balbinus. Nevertheless, Pupienus's reign would not last, as only after 99 days in office, he and his co-emperor would be hacked to death in a bath house by the Praetorian Guards.
