Description

GAUL. Nemausus. Augustus (27 BC-AD 14), with Marcus Agrippa (died 12 BC). AE dupondius (25mm, 9.96 gm, 6h). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Gaul, Nemausus, ca. 16/15-10 BC. IMP / DIVI•F, bare head of Augustus right (on right), and laureate head of Agrippa left (on left) wearing rostral crown, back to back / COL-NEM, crocodile standing right, chained to palm tree with long vertical fronds, wreath in left field with long ties, two palm fronds below. RPC I 523.

Following Caesar's campaigns on the Nile, the veterans of his legions were given plots of lands in the new "Colony of Nemausus" in present-day Nîmes, France. Augustus minted this issue which commemorates their work in Egypt by showing a crocodile, symbolically representing Egypt, chained to a palm tree with a laurel wreath, representing Rome, along with COL-NEM for the Colony of Nemausus. This symbolism remains on Nîmes' coat of arms to this day.
