Description

1849 25C Quarter MS 62 SEGS. Briggs 2-A. Thanks to increased gold shipments from California and rising silver prices, bullion speculators melted most of the 340,000 quarters that emerged from the Philadelphia Mint in 1849. This piece, one of the handful of extant Mint State survivors, displays intense russet and electric-blue peripheral highlights that frame its brilliant centers. While the strike is bold and leaves no detail incomplete, we note numerous bagmarks that are indicative of the MS 62 grade tier. The surfaces are, however, quite frosty and the reverse readily displays its characteristic "Compass Point" feature at the juncture between the first set of vertical stripes and the horizontal lines. An important opportunity for the advanced specialist, it may be some time before another Mint State example of this issue appears at auction.
