1864 25C Quarter MS 60 SEGS (AU 58). Briggs 1-A. Most Mint State survivors of this heavily melted P-mint issue are of this die variety. Although the fields are modestly reflective and the devices carry a heavy layer of mint frost, the diagnostic die chips on Liberty's thigh distinguish this business striking from a similarly dated proof specimen. While the numerous small bagmarks that pepper the surfaces account for the basal Mint State grade, we note that the untoned faces and crisply delineated features give this coin excellent overall eye appeal. A lovely example of this scarce and often overlooked Civil War quarter.
