Description

1875-S 20C Twenty Cent Piece, So-Called Proof Dies AU58 Cleaned SEGS (AU58 Cleaned). This coin is from the same dies as the branch mint proofs for the 1875-S. The die characteristics for the proofs include horizontal die polish lines in the shield below LIBERTY, a spike that points left from the pole below Liberty's hand, the T in CENTS without its left foot, and the bottom foot of the S separated due to die polish. Business strikes were also produced in quantity from these dies, however, and to designate this cleaned and lightly circulated example as a proof requires something of a leap of faith. Sharply struck but with slight weakness on the eagle's chest and talons, and on the hair of Liberty. The fields are moderately abraded, but there are no singularly mentionable marks. This Lot is accompanied by an interesting typewritten letter (with signature cropped) from Walter Breen that discusses the struck from proof dies nature of the present piece. (#5298) (Registry values: P1, N230) (NGC ID# 23R7, PCGS# 5298)
