Description

Possible Proof 1878 Gold Dollar

1878 G$1 Gold Dollar PR60 SEGS (AU58). Breen (1988) writes that proofs "have extra outlines on all of DOLLAR, normal date" while business strikes "come with or without extra outlines on DOLL; final 8 often filled." The present piece has outlines about the DOLL (but not the AR) in DOLLAR, and the 8 has diagonal die lines inside the loop. Therefore, it has been struck by Breen's business strike dies. However, the strike is needle-sharp, and the devices offer mild cameo contrast with the gently reflective fields. The obverse field has faint hairlines consistent with brief non-numismatic handling. Whether proof or business strike, the 1878 Gold Dollar is certainly rare. 3,000 business strikes and 20 proofs were issued. (#7579) (Registry values: N991)
