    Description

Elusive Proof 1893 Liberty Ten Dollar

1893 $10 Eagle PR61 Altered Surfaces SEGS (PR58 Altered Surfaces). This year marked the first time that the Philadelphia Mint used its newly installed hydraulic press for striking proof coinage. However, there is no obvious change in the appearance of the coins. Only 55 proof Tens were made in this year, but far fewer exist today with perhaps as few as 15-18 survivors known in all grades. The bright, watery surfaces on this slightly mishandled specimen display numerous scattered contact marks.
