1875-S Twenty-Cents PR 62 PCI. Listed in Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins as a branch mint proof, we can verify that this piece is the Roy Rauch plate coin displayed in the book. To its credit, the piece exhibits wide, sharp rims and reflective, tho' not particularly deep fields. It is bright and flashy, with traces of golden toning present, and some light hairlining to account for the grade. Breen indicated that this piece was by far the best of the known "proofs." That said, the dies used also produced business strikes. Breen stated that the diagnostics of the these dies were a necessary condition of proof status, but not (by themselves) sufficient evidence thereof. Because there is no known documentation from the San Francisco mint detailing proof strikings, it must be stated that knowledgable numismatists may be divided as to this coin's proof status. The successful bidder will have ample opportunity to research this question further.
