An interesting hoard of 65 US naval documents, mostly from the Nineteenth Century, including travel orders, account statements, hospital lists, and appointments. The earliest items include a salary account from 1818, 1820 travel orders, two pay allotments of 1823 (for $15 monthly support of Sail Maker William Bingley’s family; $5 monthly for Seaman William Pepper’s family), and an 1825 pay roster of the USN North Carolina. The latest item is a 1909 Voucher for Commutation of Quarters for William F. Halsey. Among the more interesting items, we note a death benefits claim from 1855, and nearly 2 dozen items of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy under Lincoln and Johnson (including travel orders & ship postings). Among the more famous officers included are: 1826 accounts for David Farragut of "Damn the torpedoes" fame; 1824 letter concerning foodstuffs and 1831 Statements of Accounts of Isaac Hull, Commander of Old Ironsides; 6 items from Vice Admiral David Porter (1844 pay allotment; 1863, Mississippi Squadron letters; 1868, on US Naval Academy letterhead); 1903 Voucher for Commutation of Quarters for Admiral George Dewey. The average condition is Fair, with most items showing extensive tears, and quite a few documents now in pieces.
