Set of Ten 1968-S Coin Dies

Set of Ten Effaced U.S. Mint 1968-S Coin Dies. Purchased by the consignor in 1972 from New England Rare Coin Galleries, housed in a large wooden box, and set in a block of styrofoam. Several clippings of ads from Coin World from this time period give the story of these items: "Each die was used in the production of the 1968-S proof-sets. Each die is serial numbered, and cancelled by the U.S. mint. No more dies will be available after our limited supply of these is exhausted.
"After the mint resumed production of proof coins in 1968, the facilities did not include means for destruction of the used dies. Consequently, a number of the dies used for proof coins, fell into the hands of a well-known former San Francisco coin dealer.
"We consider ourselves fortunate to have had the opportunity to purchase the entire remaining portion (3,000 pieces) of this famous hoard. These dies are completely legal for collectors to own, as they were cancelled by the mint in varying degrees so they could no longer be used in production of coins, although a small part of the design remained on some of the dies. On the overwhelming majority of these, the detail was completely destroyed."
Very little detail can be made out on the dies. Nevertheless, these are a fascinating piece of modern numismatics. (PCGS# 1500001)
