    Description

Interesting Wells Fargo & Co. Strong Box

Wells Fargo & Co. Strong Box. A fascinating piece of the Old West, this strongbox displays the serial number 4627 prominently on both the front plate and the lid. Although the balance of the box is plain, the two handles are attached to the sides with ornamented plates. Heavy rust has caused noticeable damage to select areas throughout. In addition, the lid has broken off due to rust.
Acquired by the consignor's father in California during 1942, this item has an interesting history attached to it. Although unconfirmed, rumor has it that this strongbox was the victim of a stagecoach robbery. This tale, if true, would explain why the lock has been broken off. Regardless of the validity of this story, this strongbox certainly dates to the late 19th century and would fit nicely into the collection of anyone who admires frontier history.
