    Complete 1935 Alaska 'Bingle' Set

(1935) Complete Eight-Piece Alaska Bingle Set. The story of the Alaska "Bingles" begins during the Great Depression. Midwestern farmers, struggling with depressed crop prices, were relocated by the Federal government to the fertile Matanuska Valley. Beginning in 1935, those farmers involved in Federal work projects were paid partly in Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation tokens, which at first could only be redeemed in government-operated stores. Local merchants also began to accept the tokens, which defeated their food stamp-related purpose. Token distribution ended in 1937. The present set is complete, including the one cent (octagonal, as always), five cent, ten cent, twenty-five cent, fifty cent, one dollar (these first six coins are in white metal), and the brass five and ten dollar pieces. Each piece grades XF to AU with attractive, original surfaces. The ten dollar might grade slightly lower because of light discoloration limited to a small portion of the reverse rim. The five and dollar tokens have the lowest mintage (1,000 pieces each) of the bingle denominations. The set is housed in a custom Capital plastic holder, imprinted ALASKA RURAL REHABILITATION TOKENS CALLED "BINGLES" ISSUED BY U.S. GOVERNMENT IN 1935
