Description

Egyptian. Late Dynastic (664-323 BC). Blue-green faience Ushabti figure. The mummiform figure stands 6.25" (16 cm) tall on custom base. He holds tools of mummification and wears a false beard and unadorned head scarf that accentuates the distinct modeling of the face. Eight horizontal lines of hieroglyphic inscription start below the folded arms and extend to the feet. Typical of the period, a bar runs down the back and connects with the base to provide stability. Outstanding condition, with fine modeling and exceptional detail in features and inscription. Intact and undamaged save for minor stress crack on back bar.

Ex Dr. Carl DeVries Collection. Dr. DeVries, a retired research associate and associate professor for the Oriental Institute, led digs on the Institute's Nubian Project as well as digs associated with the Aswan Dam Recovery Project. He worked in Egypt from 1950 to 1972. During his tenure in Egypt he purchased this ushabti in Luxor from a local antiquities dealer of good repute.
