INDIA. Kushan Empire. Vasudeva II (ca. AD 267-300). AV dinar (22mm, 7.77 gm, 12h). Choice XF. Kushan standard, Mathura/Gandhara, main mint. ÞAONANOÞAO BA-ZOΔHO KOÞANO, Vasudeva II standing facing, nimbate head left, wearing diadem with ribbons to right, conical jeweled hat with earflap, jeweled partially open kaftan with long loosely fitting sleeves and sharply arched hemline, and bracelets, over trousers and boots, dropping pellets with right hand over lit altar to left, grounded filleted staff with double knot finials in left; filleted trident to left, bha (Brahmi) altar and left leg, gha under left arm, VaSu to right / Illegible Bactrian legend, Ardoxsho seated facing on high-backed throne with ornate legs, wearing halo, hair in ringlets to shoulders, ankle-length robe, and scarf draped from right arm over left knee, filleted investiture garland in right hand, cornucopia in left; tamgha to left above, dotted border. Göbl, MK 576.By the time of Vasudeva II at the end of the 3rd century AD, the Kushan Empire, whose rulers are sometimes referred to as the "Little Kushans" in this later period, had shrunk to the area around Taxila in western Punjab, pressured on either side by the Gupta Empire and the Kushano-Sasanians. The royal portrait on the obverse, depicting the emperor standing wearing Kushan military garb, would go on to be imitated by the myriad Hunnic tribes that would supplant the Kushana. The abundance of gold dinars issued by Vasudeva II at the sunset of the Kushan Empire attests to the wealth of his rump state, which rested near the geographic center of the Silk Road.
