Grandson of Herod the Great, Agrippa I was named after the famous right-hand man of Augustus Caesar and sent to Rome to be raised and educated in close proximity to the Imperial family. His upbringing brought him into close contact with several Roman Emperors, including Caligula and Claudius, as well as the scheming endemic in the royal household. Tiberius threw him into prison for daring to wish for the accession of his close friend Caligula, but he was released when Caligula did indeed succeed and Agrippa was soon made client king over much of his grandfather's former realm. His judicious rule and zeal for Judaism pleased most of his subjects and has his reign lasted longer he might have reconciled the Jews to Roman rule and avoided the disasters of succeeding decades; however he tried to root out the new faith of Christianity and was condemned as cruel and heartless by the author of Acts of the Apostles. His sudden death in 44 AD was deeply mourned by most Jews but viewed as God's just punishment by the fledgling Christian community.
