    Description

    Spectacular Cistophorus

Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR cistophorus (12.03 gm). Pergamum, 27-26 BC. IMP. CAESAR, bare head of Augustus right / AVGVSTVS, Capricorn flying right, looking back, bearing cornucopia, all within laurel wreath. RPC RIC 453. RPC 2211. A splendid specimen, struck on a broad flan from dies of superb style and beautifully toned. Minor roughness in reverse field. Choice extremely fine.

    From the Rubicon Collection.

The cistophorus, a lightweight silver tetradrachm weighing about 12 grams, was introduced in the Kingdom of Pergamum in the early 2nd century BC. The coin got its name from the standard depiction of a cista mystica, or sacred basket containing a serpent, on the obverse. When the kingdom was bequeathed to Rome in 133 BC and became Asia Province, the Romans retained the denomination as a three-denarius piece. Augustus broke new ground by removing the standard cista design and replacing it with his own portrait and a variety of reverse types, including his natal symbol of Capricorn, seen here.
