    Description

German 'Conquest' Denarius with Augustus, Tiberius and Drusus

Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (18mm, 3.98 gm, 5h). NGC Choice XF5/5 - 5/5. Fine Style. Lugdunum, 15 BC. AVGVSTVS-DIVI•F, bare head of Augustus right / IMP•X, Augustus seated left on curule chair set on dais, extending hand toward two soldiers (Tiberius and Drusus), each carrying parazonium and presenting laurel branches. RIC I 165a. RSC 133. Splendid old cabinet toning.

Ex Dr. Patrick Tan Collection (Ira & Larry Goldberg, Auction 98, 6 June 2017), lot 2214; purchased privately from Edward Waddell.
This interesting reverse records the heady days when Augustus's two stepsons, Tiberius and Drusus, began the Alpine campaign which aimed to bring all of Germany under Roman control. The scene depicted on the reverse above shows Drusus and Tiberius presenting victory laurels to Augustus for subjugating the tribes occupying the foothills of the Alps. This was to be the staging ground for a gigantic flank attack that would conquer all of Germania to the Elbe and Weser Rivers. A series of campaigns by Drusus 12-9 BC seem to have accomplished this; however, the death of Drusus due to injuries suffered in a freak riding accident in September of 9 BC was a setback which cost the Romans dearly and eventually lost them control of "free Germany" east of the Rhine.
