    Description

    Very Rare Crab Aureus

Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AV aureus (20mm, 8.23 gm, 9h). NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5, marks. 19 BC, M. Durmius, moneyer. CAESAR-AVGVSTVS, oak-wreathed head of Augustus right / M • DVRMIVS / III • VIR, crab seen from above, holding butterfly. RIC I 316. B. Damnski, SNR 76, 1997, Virgil's Siren on Coins of 19 BC, 10 and plate 12, 10 (this coin). Bahrfeldt 174. Calicó 133. B. Durmia 11. BMC 60. Cohen 433. Very rare; one of only three examples sold at public auction in the last fifteen years.

From the Morris Collection. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica, Auction 31 (26 October 2005), lot 13; M&M Sale 13 (1954), lot 622.

This beautiful reverse has puzzled numismatists from Eckhel to Mattingly, none whom could find a satisfactory explanation. Its decorative appearance suggests it is a pun of some kind, as was common during the period, but the moneyer's name, M. Durmius, does not give us any clues.
