    Description

Catuvellauni & Trinovantes. Tasciovanus (ca. 25-10 BC). AV stater (5.43 gm). TASCIO / RICON in two lines in rectangular panel on vertical open wreath; pellets to either side of panel / Celticized horseman galloping left, head turned to right, armored in chain mail, brandishing sword and holding shield; annulet to left, pellet-in-annulet below. Hobbs 1629-36. Van Arsdell 1780-5. SCBC 219. ABC 2580. Rare! Sharp reverse, and much nicer than all the specimens in the cited references. Extremely fine.

From the W.B. and R.E. Montgomery Collection.

Van Arsdell notes that this coin types provides evidence that Celtic warriors in Britain wore chain mail armor, like their Gallic brethren. After encountering mail-clad Celtic warriors, the Romans adopted mail in the 2nd century BC and it remained in continuous use as a primary form of body defense until the AD 1300s. The title 'RICON' inscribed on this coin type is a variant of the Celtic rigon, or over-king, indicating that other kings paid homage to Tasciovanus.
