    Unlisted Constantius II Trier Medallion

    Constantius II, as Augustus (AD 337-361). AR medallion of four heavy siliquae or three light miliarenses (38mm, 13.33 gm, 6h). NGC (photo-certificate) Choice VF 5/5 - 3/5. Trier, AD 340-350. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS PIVS FELIX AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II right, seen from front / TRIVMFATOR GENTI-VM BARBARARVM, emperor standing facing in military attire, head left, labarum with wreath on banner in right hand; TR in exergue. RIC VIII -, cf. RIC 79 (Thessalonica). Cohen 194 (Thessalonica). Gnecchi 50 (Thessalonica). Extremely rare as a type, but unpublished and unique for the Trier mint.

Hoffman (17 June 1872, Paris), lot 3646.

    This stunning and unique silver medallion was struck at Trier, probably as a special handout to military officers and important civilians. The reverse depicts Constantius in full armor and emblazoned with the grandiose legend "Conqueror of the Barbarian Peoples".
