    Domitian's Triumphal Ride

    Domitian, as Caesar (AD 69-81). AV aureus (21mm, 7.26 gm, 6h).  Rome, under Vespasian, AD 73. CAES AVG F DOMIT COS II, laureate head of Domitian right / No legend, Domitian on horse rearing left; he raises his right hand in salute and cradles in left arm a scepter topped by a human head. RIC 540 (R) (Vespasian). BMCRE 123. Cohen 663. Calic├│ 812a. An impressive piece, deeply struck on a broad flan. NGC (photo-certificate) Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5.

    The reverse image recalls Domitian's role in the the Flavian family's Judean triumph in June of AD 71. According to Suetonius, the young Domitian rode a magnificent white horse behind the chariots carrying his father Vespasian and brother Titus, at the head of the procession of dignitaries.
