    Rare Olympian Stater

    ELIS. Olympia. Ca. 432 BC. AR stater (24mm, 12.08 gm, 3h). Struck for the 87th Olympiad. Eagle alighting right, wings above his body, grasping hare in talons and tearing at it with his beak / Nike, clad in peplos, wings spread to either side, seated left on the upper of two steps, holding with her right hand a long palm branch with frond behind her head, and resting her left hand on the step behind her; below lower step, olive spray. Seltman 133. BCD 55 (same dies). SNG Delepierre 2093. Extremely rare! Graffito KO in obverse field, otherwise Nearly Very Fine.

    An exceedingly rare example of the Elian coinage commemorating the Olympic Games, held at four-year intervals at the athletic festival site of Olympia. The only other example of Seltman 133 to have sold in the past five years, the Prospero specimen, struck from the same dies as this example and in only marginally better condition, achieved a hammer price of $85,000 hammer in January 2012.
