    Description

Judaea. Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 C.E. AE 29 mm (12.14 g, 3 h). Year 1 (132/3 C.E.). Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Jerusalem" within wreath / Two-handled amphora; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Year one of the redemption of Israel". Mildenberg 13 (O3/R9); TJC 221 (same obv. die as illus.); Hendin 676. VF, brown patina, edge corrosion and light smoothing on obverse. Very rare.

Interesting anonymous early Jewish rebel issue referring only to Jerusalem and the desire to redeem Judaea from Roman occupation. Later issues of year one name Shimon bar Kochba as the messianic leader of the revolt. This type was evidently struck before Shimon felt comfortable enough in his power to identify himself as the true authority behind the coinage.
