    Description

Judaea. Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 C.E. AR zuz (19 mm, 3.34 g, 6 h). Years 1 and 2 (132/3 and 133/4 C.E.). Bunch of grapes on vine; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Year one of the Redemption of Israel" / Chelys; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Year two of the Freedom of Israel". Mildenberg 9 (O1/R7); TJC 236; AJC II 19; Hendin 684. Good VF, lighty toned, overstruck on a denarius of Trajan(?). Very rare hybrid issue - only six specimens cited by Mildenberg.

A very rare mule using reverse dies of the first and second years of the bloody Bar Kochba Revolt against the Romans in Judaea. This unusual die combination and the standard use of Roman denarii as flans suggests the great haste of Bar Kochba's minters in their effort to produce an autonomous Jewish coinage.
