    Description

Judaea. First Jewish War. 66-70 C.E. AE 1/2 shekel (26 mm, 12 g, 12 h). Jerusalem, year 4 (69/70 C.E.). Seven-branched date palm tree flanked by baskets; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "For the Redemption of Zion" / Ethrog (citron) flanked by lulavim; Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Year Four, Half". TJC 211; AJC II 25; Hendin 668. VF, brown patina with sandy deposits. Well centered and struck. Very rare.

The types of this coin are all related to the Jewish harvest thanksgiving festival of Sukkot, also called the Feast of Tabernacles in which the devout lived outside in tents and used ritual bundles (lulavim) of myrtle, palm, and willow branches. However, the thankfulness of the people of Jerusalem was probably muted at this time because of the increasingly successful Roman siege that caused widespread starvation in the city. The use of bronze for an apparent shekel denomination illustrates the severe difficulties in Jerusalem.
