    Rare Mint State Joint Reign Justin and Justinian Issue of Four Months

    Justin I and Justinian I (4 April-1 August AD 527). AV solidus (20mm, 4.48 gm, 6h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. Constantinople, 6th officina. D N IVSTIN ET IVSTINIAN PP AVG, Justin I and Justinian I enthroned facing on straight backed double throne with uprights and crossbar, both nimbate and wearing chlamys, right hands clasped to breasts, globe in left; cross above between, CONOB in exergue / VICTORI-A AVGGG S, angel standing facing, long cross in right hand, globus cruciger in left; star in right field, CONOB in exergue. Sear 118 var. (unlisted officina). DOC 3 var (same).

    Late in his reign, Justin I felt his health failing and adopted his nephew as co-Augustus to solidify the succession. The young man ascended the throne as Flavius Justinianus, thus launching the reign of the greatest of the early Byzantine rulers. The joint reign lasted barely four months and produced only a handful of coins depicting both rulers.
