    Rare Joint-Reign Justin and Justinian Issue of Four Months

    Justin I and Justinian I (April-August AD 527). AV solidus (20mm, 4.48 gm, 6h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5, scuff. Constantinople. D N IVSTIN ET IVSTINIAN P P AVG, Justin I and Justinian I, hands clasped to breasts, enthroned on straight-backed double throne with uprights and no crossbar; CONOB in exergue / VICTORI-A AVCCC Δ, angel standing facing, long cross in right hand, globus cruciger in left; star in right field, CONOB in exergue. Sear 115 (unlisted officina, only Є and Z noted). W.E. Metcalf, "Joint Reign Gold of Justin I and Justinian I", in Studies in Early Byzantine Gold Coinage, Group II (unlisted dies). Carefully centered and evenly struck. Extremely rare issue.

    Late in his reign, Justin I felt his health failing and adopted his nephew as co-Augustus to solidify the succession. The young man ascended the throne as Flavius Justinianus, thus launching the reign of the greatest of the early Byzantine rulers. The joint reign lasted barely five months and produced only a handful of coins depicting both rulers.
