DOC 2a. Berk 240. Very rare! Well struck on a huge flan. NGC (photo-certificate) AU 5/5 - 4/5, overstruck.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Dreesmann Collection, Part II (Spink & Sons, London, July 2000), lot 609; J. Vinchon (25 April 1966), lot 275.

Of Armenian descent, Leo V was a successful general in the armies of Nicephorus I and Michael I, dealing both the Arabs and Bulgarians several defeats. Upon the collapse of Michael I's regime, he assumed the throne with the backing of the Iconoclast faction of the army, who hoped he would revive the days of the heroic soldier-emperors Leo III and Constantine V. Leo accordingly launched a second phase of Iconoclasm, once again putting the Byzantine populace and army at odds. The death of the Bulgar Kahn Krum in 814 seemed to show God's favor to the Iconoclastic emperor, but his reign was cut short when he was assassinated on the high altar of Hagia Sophia on Christmas Day, AD 820.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
