    Description

    Rare Philip V Variety

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Philip V (221-179 BC). AR tetradrachm (30mm, 17.11 gm, 12h).  Pella or Amphipolis, 211-197 BC. Beardless head of Perseus left, wearing Phrygian helmet ornamented with wings and griffin's head, harpa over shoulder, within boss of Macedonian shield decorated with seven eight-pointed stars within double crescents / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ, large club within oak wreath, M in outer field to left. Boehringer, Chron. pl. 8, 7 (same dies).  AMNG III pg. 197, 1 (Philip VI; same dies). Well-centered and crisply struck. Very rare variety! Extremely Fine.

While all varieties of Philip V's tetradrachms are scarce, this type, with a beardless Perseus on the obverse, a particularly 'beefy' club and the absence of control marks within the wreath on the reverse, is quite rare.  They were so different from the other Philip V issues that Gaebler (in AMNG) attributed them to Philip VI Andriscus.  A full re-assessment of the coinage was conducted by Boehringer, who examined the coins Gaebler studied, and concluded that the latter's argument was not convincing. They are now thought to belong to Philip V's second coinage, from 211-197 BC.
