    Description

Miletos. Ca. 259-246 BC. AR "Persic" stater (10.57 gm). Laureate head of Apollo left / Lion walking left, head right, looking back at eight-pointed star, MI over AP monograms to left, magistrate ΣAMIOΣ in exergue. Deppert-Lipitz 504 (same reverse die). Bement Collection (Naville, June 1924) lot 11465 (same obverse die). Extremely rare, one of 14 known specimens, this one easily among the finest. Good extremely fine.

The unusual weight standard of this piece is quite distinct from the one normally employed by Miletos in the 3rd century BC, which employed didrachms of about 6.5 grams. Some scholars have noted that the new standard is equivalent to two of the old Persian sigloi and have dubbed it a "Persic" standard; however, the Persian Empire was long gone and the siglos had not been actively minted for a half-century by the time these pieces were struck. The reason for the change thus remains puzzling and unexplained, but the new standard was soon abandoned, as only 14 "Persic" staters of Miletos have survived to the present, only four in the name of the magistrate Samios.
