    Description

    Elusive Isis-Serapis Type

PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy IV (222-204/5 BC). AR tetradrachm (25mm, 14.21 gm, 11h). Alexandria, 217-215 BC. Jugate busts right of Serapis, laureate and draped, and Isis, wreathed and draped; small cap of Osiris above Serapis, globe and horns above Isis / ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ, Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; cornucopia tied with fillet over shoulder. Svoronos 1123 variant (no letters between legs). SNG Copenhagen 197 variant (same). Rare and seldom encountered in this grade! Well struck in sound metal, with beautiful old cabinet toning. NGC Choice XF? 4/5 - 4/5.

This highly unusual issue apparently was struck shortly after the Battle of Raphia in 217 BC, in which the Ptolemaic army decisively defeated the invading Seleucid forces of Antiochus III. The army supposedly offered prayers to Serapis and his consort Isis before the battle, which were answered with a victory. This particular example is doubly rare in lacking the usual control letters ΔΙ between the eagle's legs.
