    Rare Eastern Revolt Solidus

Revolt of the Heraclii (AD 608-610). AV solidus (22mm, 4.48 gm, 7h).  Jerusalem or military mint in Cyprus or Syria, AD 610. dN hЄRACLI-US PP AV, crowned, draped, and cuirassed facing bust of Heraclius (resembling Phocas), holding globus cruciger / VICTORIA AVSЧ, angel standing facing, holding long staff surmounted by a staurogram and globus cruciger; IΠ // CONOB. Sear 850 (Jerusalem). DOC II 186 (Alexandria). MIB II 76 (Cyprus). Extremely rare and among the finest known examples. NGC (photo-certificate) MS? 4/5 - 5/5.

From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Dreesmann Collection, Part II (Spink & Sons, London, July 2000), lot 472; privately purchased from Spink, June 1985.

    S. Bendall and M. F. Hendy initially identified this issue as a product of the Jerusalem mint issued during the eastern wars of Heraclius,  shortly before the fall of the city to the Sasanians in AD 614. New evidence suggests the issue occurred at an Eastern mint (possibly Cyprus) during the revolt of Heraclius and his father, the exarch of Carthage, against the regime of Phocas in Constantinople. The imperial effigy closely resembles Phocas and not the image of Heraclius which became established after he seized control of Constantinople in AD 610.

This coin from the Dimitriadis Collection has been issued a photo-certificate by NGC. It may be sent in for encapsulation after the auction at the request of the buyer, free of charge. E-mail SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
