    Description

    Unique Leaping Lion

    Samaria (late 4th century BC). AR quarter-shekel (15mm, 3.67 gm, 5h). ¬ (S L for Shelemiyah?) to left of helmeted male with short tunic holding bridle of horse with head turned back, all in square border of dots / ¬ above lion leaping r. with head turned back over ram's head, all in square border of dots. Samuels 19 (this coin). Cf. SNG ANS 46 (ma'ah-obol). Cf. M-Q SC 67 (ma'ah-obol) and 68 (half ma'ah-obol). Unique. Find patina. Good Very Fine.

    While the types are known from smaller denominations, this appears to be the only known example as a quarter-shekel.
