    Extremely Rare Ardashir-Shapur Double Portrait

SASANIAN KINGDOM. Ardashir I (AD 223/4-242) with Shapur as Prince (AD 233-240). AR drachm (27mm, 4.34 gm, 3h).  Struck AD 233-238. Draped bust of Ardashir I right, wearing diadem (type R) and close-fitting headdress with korymbos and  ear flaps, confronted by draped bust of Shapur left, wearing Parthian-style tiara / Fire altar of Ahura Mazda with fluted shafts and supports tied with diadems. Gobl VI/2. Cf. Sunrise 725 (pellet between busts). Extremely rare and almost never offered early dynastic issue. Extremely Fine.

It is uncertain whether the Prince Shapur presented on this extremely rare silver drachm of Ardashir I was actually his son and eventual successor, Shapur I the Great (AD 240-272). Most sources place Shapur's elevation to co-ruler in AD 240; however, the rare drachms and bronze pieces showing both portraits are clearly dated earlier, to AD 233-238. Once sources mentions an elder son of Ardashir, also named Shapur, who may have been raised to the rank of co-ruler for a time before his younger brother, but predeceased Ardashir about AD 238. Ardashir then raised his second son, who eventually succeeded him.
