    Description

SELEUCID KINGDOM. Demetrius I Soter (162-150 BC). AR tetradrachm (27mm, 16.76 gm, 9h). Ecbatana. Diademed head of Demetrius right, diadem ties coiled at back, within wreath border, horse's head (?) before / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ, Apollo seated left on omphalos, examining arrow held in right hand and resting left on grounded bow,  ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ in exergue (partially doubled). SC --, cf. 1726 (no horse head, fillet border). Cf. HGC 9, 791 (same). Apparently unique, with no other recorded specimens! Apparently overstruck on an earlier tetradrachm of the same ruler, with some elements and legends partially doubled. NGC Choice VF? 4/5 - 3/5, overstruck.

A remarkable and apparently unique specimen. The mint may be confidently identified as Ecbatana due to the Apollo-on-omphalos reverse and the coiled diadem ties on the obverse; however, no other Ecbatana tetradrachm employs the wreath around the obverse portrait or an obverse symbol (a horse's head).
