    Description

    Spectacular Rarity

SICILY. Syracuse. Fifth Democracy (ca. 214-212 BC). AR 8 litrae (24mm, 6.76 gm, 4h).  Signed by the engraver Ly(sid...). Head of Demeter left, wreathed in grain ears, wearing triple pendant earring and pearl necklace; behind, owl standing left / Nike, holding goad in her right hand and reins in her left, driving quadriga galloping to right; above, monogram of ΑΡΚ; on ground line, in tiny letters, ΛΥ; ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ in exergue. Burnett, Enna D 36, 6 (same dies). Jameson 894. An extremely rare piece of uncommon beauty, certainly the finest specimen extant. Choice Extremely Fine.

    Ex Roma IV (London, 30 September 2012), lot 105; NAC 33 (Zurich, 5 April 2006), lot 105; Monnaies et Médailles 61 (Paris, 7 October 1982), lot 73.

This extremely rare piece, struck under emergency conditions as Syracuse suffered under Roman siege during the Second Punic War, is the last of the great signed die issues from this important city. The engraver "Lysid," who's tiny initials appear on the reverse double exergual line, is an artist of uncommon ability, his dies evoking the works of the master engravers Cimon, Euainetos, Eumenes, Parmenides, Sosion, and a select cadre of others who set the numismatic world on fire two centuries previous.
