    Description

SOCIAL WAR. Marsic Confederation. Ca. 90-88 BC. AR denarius (3.59 gm). Bovianum(?), 89 BC. Laureate and draped bust of Italia left; behind, Oscan inscription: viteli├║ / Soldier standing facing, head right, resting foot on uncertain object, holding sword and inverted spear; beside him to right, recumbent bull; in exergue, I. Campana group 9b, 137 (D94/R116). Sydenham 627. HN Italy 407. Very rare. Attractively toned. Extremely fine.

This coin was struck to support the military cause of the Italian allies (socii in Latin) during the Social War of 99-88 BC. The conflict developed out of dissatisfaction amongst the twelve allied Italian peoples, who served in the Roman armies but did not enjoy equal compensation in terms of political rights and compensation in booty and land. Thanks in large part to the general (later dictator), L. Cornelius Sulla, this revolt was ultimately crushed, although in order to avoid future trouble in Italy revisions to Roman policy soon followed. The coinage of the Italian allies regularly employed propagandistic types: here Italia is depicted along with a victorious Italian soldier standing on the leg of a recumbent bull, evidently symbolizing a defeated Rome.

    More Information:

The reverse type of this coin depicts an unfavorable oath made between the Romans and the Samnites at the Battle of the Caudine Forks in 321 BC. Despite the humiliating terms accepted by the consuls on this occasion, the Senate ratified the peace and remained true to the oath until 316 BC, when it was again possible to continue the Second Samnite War (326-304 BC). On the coin, the Samnite leader, C. Pontius, and a  Roman consul make their oath over a sacrificial pig.
