Theodora, Sole Reign (AD 1055-1056). AV histamenon nomisma (25mm, 4.39 gm, 6h). NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5, clipped. Constantinople. + IhX IhC RЄX-RЄΣNANITIm (sic), Christ standing facing on dais, wearing nimbus cruciger with no pellets, pallium and colobium, right hand raised in benediction, book of Gospels cradled in left arm, double border / + ΘЄOΔΩPA-AVΓOVCTA, Theodora (on left) standing facing, right hand on breast, wearing crown with pendilia, saccos with cross and loros, and the Virgin (on right) standing facing, nimbate, wearing pallium and maphorium, left hand raised in benediction, jointly holding labarum with five pellets on banner and pellet on shaft between them; M-Θ flanking Virgin, double border. Sear 1837. DOC 3.2, 1a. Amazingly detailed reverse with satiny surfaces. The obverse legend on this issue is often slightly blundered, as on this specimen.From the Morris Collection.
