DN THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over right shoulder and shield on left arm / SALVS REI-PVBLICAE, Theodosius II and Valentinian III seated facing on double throne, each nimbate and wearing consular robes, holding mappa in right hand, cruciform scepter in left; star above; Z/CONOB. RIC 237. Depeyrot 79/1. An absolutely perfect specimen, with sharp devices and lustrous fields, achieving the highest possible grade issued by NGC for an ancient coin (Gem MS ★ ).

    This scarce type was struck to celebrate the successful installation of the young Valentinian III, cousin to Theodosius, on the throne of the Western Roman Empire.
