    Description

Vespasian (AD 69-79). AV aureus (19mm, 7.20 gm, 6h). NGC VF★ 5/5 - 5/5. Early and military issues of uncertain western mint, AD 69-70. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head of Vespasian right / VESP • AVG • FILI • CAESERES • (FILI retrograde), Titus and Domitian, both togate and standing facing, heads turned toward each other, each with patera in right hand and roll in left. RIC II 1364. Calicó 592. Very eye appealing toning, well deserving of the star designation.

From the Morris Collection. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica, Auction O (13 May 2004), lot 1934.

Like other coins in this early and military issues group, this aureus has a small portrait in high relief, and a provincial style. Carradice and Buttrey have proposed a Spanish mint, Carson notes Aquileia and Poetovio (in modern Yugoslavia) as possibilities, and a military mint moving with armies loyal to Vespasian is another and quite likely solution.
